The Return of the Lions: Lions Replenish Tight End Position from Hawkeyes After Trading TJ

Lions Acquire Nick Brinkerhoff from Iowa

The Sporting News Provides Draft Analysis

[Location] - The Detroit Lions have made a move to bolster their tight end position, acquiring Nick Brinkerhoff from the Iowa Hawkeyes in exchange for a future draft pick.

Brinkerhoff, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end, was a key contributor for the Hawkeyes in 2022, catching 25 passes for 290 yards and four touchdowns. He is known for his strong hands, physicality, and ability to create separation from defenders.

The Lions traded away tight end T.J. Hockenson to the Minnesota Vikings earlier this offseason, creating a need at the position. Brinkerhoff is expected to fill that void and compete for a starting role alongside second-year tight end James Mitchell.

The Sporting News has provided analysis of the trade, praising the Lions for acquiring a young and talented tight end with upside. Eric Edholm of TSN writes, "Brinkerhoff is a physical specimen with the size, speed, and athleticism to be a difference-maker in the NFL. He has the potential to develop into a starting-caliber tight end."

The Lions are hoping that Brinkerhoff can provide them with a reliable target in the passing game and help improve their offensive production in 2023. He will join a young and talented offense that includes quarterback Jared Goff, running back D'Andre Swift, and wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.
